The start of any journey is the most exciting part. You are not too sure what to expect along the way or what you will learn but the possibility of what lies ahead keeps you going. This is important to think about as you start your entrepreneurial journey through the Allan Gray Makers Programme!
LETS BEGIN
Welcome to
Discovering Me!
It’s a big word that seems very intimidating and sometimes out of reach. When you break it down, it means to come up with a solution to a problem and action it. It’s that simple. In order to think of an idea to solve a problem, you must have seen something around you that you want to change or improve. This means being aware of what is happening around you and having a desire to make it better. Where does this desire come from and how can you understand it better? This is what you will learn more about in Discovering me!
Before you think about ideas that will bring about change, you have to spend some time understanding who you are. Aristotle is a philosopher who once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Knowing yourself focuses on discovering who you are, what you believe in and why and what you want to achieve. All of these factors are important in an entrepreneurial journey because they will keep you focused and motivated to keep going when you face challenges.
It’s time to start discovering YOU so that you can answer the why question in your life! This starts by understanding all the different aspects that make you who you are as seen below.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Identify and express your personal strengths, weaknesses, values and interests.
Create a personal vision statement
Clearly define specific and measurable personal development goals
To ensure that you understand the concepts taught throughout this course and to consolidate your learning, you will complete different types of learning activities. A selection of these learning activities will be graded, and your marks for these tasks will count towards your overall course grade, which needs to be 50% or more in order for you to obtain a course certificate. You also need to obtain 50% or more in every graded learning activity.
Your effort in completing the graded learning activities in blocks one and two of this course will count 40% towards your final course grade. In certain graded activities, you will be shown the criteria against which your final answers will be evaluated in marking rubrics, so that you can complete the activities to the best of your ability.
While there are activities in this, and other, blocks which may not count towards your final grade, it is very important that you complete them as they will help you to check your understanding of concepts, assist you in completing the graded activities and consolidate your learning from the course. For most multiple-choice questions in learning activities, once you have tried to answer them twice, you will be able to click on the “Show answer” button to read the recommended answers or feedback so that you can develop your understanding.
Now that you know what to expect in Module 1: Discovering me, let’s familiarise ourselves with important words and ideas we will use throughout this module and others. You will also be able to remind yourself about these new words and concepts by visiting the glossary which will contain all of the new terms you learn throughout this course.
